With this painting, I wanted to explore the profound power of silence. Unlike my other portrait where Christ looks directly at the viewer, I chose to depict him here with his eyes closed, downcast in deep, contemplative prayer. It is a snapshot of the quiet center within a storm—a moment of internal peace, heavy surrender, and spiritual strength right before the final sacrifice.
I focused heavily on the stark contrast of light falling across his face. Luminous, sculptural highlights define his features, symbolizing a divine internal light emerging from within the deep shadow. The crown of thorns is layered with dry-brush textures to emphasize its sharp, physical reality, yet his expression remains completely tranquil. The background features vertical, cascading streaks of deep brown, burnt umber, and subtle gold dust textures, giving the impression of a sacred space veiled in mystery.
Painting this was a deeply reflective experience for me. My hope is that when you look at this canvas on your wall, it brings an immediate sense of stillness to your heart, serving as a sanctuary of peace and a reminder of the strength found in quiet surrender.
