With this piece, I wanted to move away from the grand scale of the crucifixion and zoom in closely on the quiet, heartbreaking intimacy of maternal love and shared grief. This painting is my exploration of a bond that transcends physical suffering—a tender touch of two profiles finding a moment of profound connection amidst the darkness.
I chose to focus on the soft contact of their foreheads to symbolize a shared mind, spirit, and sorrow. I painted Jesus with the crown of thorns faintly visible, a subtle reminder of his burden, while Mary is draped in a deep, traditional blue cowl that frames her grief-stricken face. The warm, gold ambient highlights catching their skin are meant to represent the enduring light of love, even in their darkest hour.
Texture plays a massive role in this canvas. The background is heavily distressed with dark umber, charcoal tones, and faint gold undertones, mimicking an ancient, weathered fresco.
