with this canvas, I wanted to strip away the grander scenes of the crucifixion and zoom in completely on the face of Christ. I sought to capture the exact moment where pain transitions into an unshakeable, divine resolve. His eyes look forward, directly engaging the viewer—inviting a deeply personal, intimate conversation between the onlooker and the canvas.
I painted the face with rich, warm earth tones, allowing his features to gracefully emerge from a heavy, shrouded abyss of dark shadows. The crown of thorns is deliberately rendered with sharp, overlapping textures that give it a stark, tactile weight across his brow. Surrounding the portrait is a halo of raw, distressed gold and dark sepia textures that mimic the look of a sacred relic weathered over centuries.
This piece was a true exercise in emotional precision for me. I hope that when it hangs in your space, it stands as a striking testament to enduring strength, comforting presence, and an unconditional love that looks right into your soul.
